In 1841 Census the family is living in Lambeth, Surrey, England. It shows another child William was born about 1837. There is no record of William’s birth.

Burial record for Caroline Hiatt
In the 1851 census Richard and the children are living in the parish of St Mary Newington in the ecclesiastical district of St Peter Walworth in the borough of Lambeth at 3 Garden Row. Another child born in 1843, Catherine, is listed with the family. She was probably the daughter of Richard and Caroline.
1851 Census for Richard Hiatt
Richard and Caroline had eight children. One child, Elizabeth, died as a child. The next girl that was born was given the name Elizabeth. Seven children lived to get married and have children of their own. Looking into the children of Richard and Caroline, they had a total of 18 grandchildren.
In the 1851 census Richard’s future wife is living in Camberwell. She goes by the name of Mary Ann Hiatt even though she is not yet married to Richard. She is listed as wife but no husband is listed. She is living with her 3 sons, Henry, Charles and Edwin at 1 Palmers Place. They all have the surname of Hiatt.
1851 Census for Mary Ann Hiatt
The baptism records for 3 boys list their father as Richard Thomas Hiatt who is a chronometer (watch maker). Richard who was married to Caroline was a chronometer. All three boys were baptized in Saint Peter, Camberwell and born before Caroline died.
Henry James Hiatt was baptized in 1837 at Saint Peter, Walworth. He was born on November 15, 1836. Three years later Charles was baptized in the same church in 1840.
Edward was baptized in September 1847 and he was born on May 20, 1845. However, Edwin is listed in the 1851 census as 1 year old, making his birth year 1850. The 1861 and 1871 censuses list Edwin with his parents and he was born in 1850. There is no baptism record for Edwin.
Edward was buried on January 31, 1848 at Saint Giles. He was living on Acorn Street at the time of his death. The same place as when he was baptized.
Another child, Elizabeth, was baptized at Saint Peter in 1834. Her parents were Richard Thomas Hiatt and Mary Ann. There are no more records for Elizabeth.
Richard Hiatt and Mary Ann Sherlock were married about three and a half years after Caroline’s death. They were married on April 28, 1853 in the parish church of St George in Camberwell. He is listed as a widower, and she is a spinster.
St George, Camberwell, Southwark, England marriage of Rhichard Thomas Hiatt and Mary Ann Sherlock
The 1861 and 1871 censuses list the couple with three sons – Edwin, the oldest, followed by Albert and Alfred.
After looking over many records for Albert, he was born in October 1852 which is before Richard and Mary Ann were married. Another son Alfred was born in 1855.
That means that Edwin and Albert were born after Caroline died but before Richard married Mary Ann.
Richard and Mary Ann had a total of seven children. Elizabeth and Edward died as children. Edwin did not marry and he is buried with his parents. Henry also did not seem to marry and he died at the age of 40 as a result of being run over by a train where he worked. The rest of the children married and had children for a total of 10 grandchildren. This means that Richard had a total of 28 grandchildren from his two wives.
In the 1871 census the family is living outside of Liverpool in Everton. This is a little over 200 miles from Camberwell. Also living in that area is Richard’s brother, Henry James Hiatt, who is also a chronometer. Could this be why Richard and Mary Ann moved from Camberwell?
